Preparation
Lesson Narrative
This is the summative assessment for Unit 3. Students will demonstrate mastery of the compound interest formula, capital gains taxation, retirement accounts (Roth vs. Traditional), fixed-income mechanics, index funds, and real estate ROI. By completing a comprehensive case study, students will prove their ability to construct a long-term, tax-advantaged wealth generation strategy.
Learning Goals
• Demonstrate mastery of Unit 3 concepts including compounding, taxation, and asset allocation.
• Apply mathematical formulas to calculate capital gains, expense ratios, and mortgage amortization.
• Analyze a case study to recommend an optimized, diversified investment portfolio.
Student Facing Learning Goals
• Let's prove we know how to invest, manage real estate, and legally minimize our taxes.
Student Facing Learning Targets
• I can pass the Unit 3 assessment with 80% or higher accuracy.
• I can apply everything I learned to build wealth in a real-world scenario.

Glossary Entries
Summative Assessment: An evaluation of student learning, skill acquisition, and academic achievement at the conclusion of a defined instructional period.
Case Study: An in-depth analysis of a real-world scenario used to apply theoretical concepts.
Lesson
Warm Up
3.14.1: The Strategy Check
Launch: Have students sit independently at their desks. Present the prompt verbally or project it. Give them 4 minutes to write.
Synthesis: Rapid-fire share out. Remind them that generating wealth is a slow, methodical, mathematical process, not a get-rich-quick scheme.
Student Facing Task
Look back at everything we learned in Unit 3: Compound interest, index funds, Roth IRAs, bonds, real estate, and capital gains taxes. What is the most powerful wealth-building tool you plan to actually use in your own life?
Activity 1
3.14.2: Assessment Part 1 - Mechanics and Math
Launch: Distribute Part 1 of the Unit 3 Assessment. Monitor independent work.
Synthesis: N/A (Summative Assessment).
Student Facing Task
Complete the multiple-choice and calculation section of your assessment. Ensure you show all of your math when calculating the Rule of 72, capital gains tax liabilities, and real estate ROI.
Activity 2
3.14.3: Assessment Part 2 - The Case Study
Launch: Distribute Part 2 of the Unit 3 Assessment (The Case Study). Monitor independent work.
Synthesis: N/A (Summative Assessment).
Student Facing Task
Read the provided Case Study detailing a 25-year-old's income, risk tolerance, and long-term goals. Complete the short-answer section by:
1. Recommending a Roth vs. Traditional IRA structure.
2. Building a diversified asset allocation model.
3. Calculating the holding period needed to avoid short-term capital gains taxes.
Lesson Synthesis
Lesson Synthesis (5 min)
Narrative: Collect the assessments. Congratulate the class on mastering one of the most complex units in the curriculum. Preview Unit 4 (Credit and Debt): "Now that we know how to build wealth, we need to learn how the credit card industry mathematically tries to steal it from us."
Cool Down
3.14.4: The Next Step
Narrative: This exit ticket prompts a personal reflection on the unit and bridges to the next.
Teacher Rubric: There is no "wrong" answer here, provided the student identifies a specific concept they feel confident about and one they are curious/nervous about moving forward.
Student Facing Task
What is one specific investment concept from this unit you feel completely confident explaining to your parents, and what is one thing about credit/debt (our next unit) that you want to learn?
