Preparation
Lesson Narrative
This is a mid-unit summative checkpoint. Students will demonstrate mastery of the mathematics of wealth generation, including the Rule of 72, compound interest calculations, index fund mechanics, and the structural differences between equities, bonds, and alternative assets.
Learning Goals
• Demonstrate mastery of compound interest and the Rule of 72.
• Distinguish between stocks, bonds, index funds, and alternative assets.
• Evaluate the impact of fees and capital gains taxes on long-term wealth.
Student Facing Learning Goals
• Let's prove we understand how to grow money and protect it from fees and taxes.
Student Facing Learning Targets
• I can pass the Mid-Unit Assessment with 80% accuracy.
• I can apply investment math to real-world scenarios.

Glossary Entries
Formative Assessment: Ongoing checks for understanding used to adjust teaching during the learning process.
Summative Assessment: An evaluation of student learning at the conclusion of a defined instructional period.
Retention: The ability to store and recall academic information over time.
Lesson
Warm Up
3.10.1: The Brain Dump
Launch: Have students sit independently at their desks. Present the prompt verbally or project it. Give them 4 minutes.
Synthesis: Rapid-fire share out. Ask them to reflect on how their perspective on "getting rich" has changed from gambling (crypto/penny stocks) to patience (index funds/compound interest).
Student Facing Task
Without looking at your notes, write down the single most surprising or shocking mathematical fact you learned in the first half of this unit. Was it the Rule of 72, the cost of mutual fund fees, or the reality of penny stocks?
Activity 1
3.10.2: Assessment Part 1 - Vocabulary & Concepts
Launch: Distribute Part 1 of the Mid-Unit Assessment. Monitor independent work.
Synthesis: N/A (Summative Assessment).
Student Facing Task
Complete the multiple-choice and vocabulary section of your assessment independently.
Activity 2
3.10.3: Assessment Part 2 - Calculation & Analysis
Launch: Distribute Part 2 of the Mid-Unit Assessment. Monitor independent work.
Synthesis: N/A (Summative Assessment).
Student Facing Task
Complete the calculation and short-answer section. Ensure you show all of your math for the Rule of 72, Expense Ratio, and Capital Gains Tax questions.
Lesson Synthesis
Lesson Synthesis (5 min)
Narrative: Collect the assessments. Congratulate the class on mastering the stock market and bonds. Preview the next section of the unit: "We know how to build wealth in the stock market. Tomorrow, we look at the other major pillar of American wealth: Real Estate."
Cool Down
3.10.4: Assessment Reflection
Narrative: This exit ticket prompts a personal reflection on their academic performance and learning gaps.
Teacher Rubric: There is no "wrong" answer, provided the student identifies a specific concept (e.g., "Calculating the tax drag on short-term capital gains was difficult to remember").
Student Facing Task
Which specific question or mathematical concept on today's assessment felt the most challenging to you, and why?
